About Us - Background

Rachel Goldstein, President

Rachel graduated from Boston University with a B.S. in Communications. After booking celebrity lecturers at a speakers bureau and handling reservations for a hotel, she worked with incoming corporate groups at a destination management company. Simultaneously, she held a second job as an event manager for a hospitality staffing company. She enjoyed her work at both jobs, which inspired her to combine the two into a single company.

So in 1988, The Party People was born with a focus on entertaining at home with professional waitstaff and unique event planning. The company grew year after year and Rachel produced bigger and more complex events for both social and corporate clients. Soon she was working in top hotels, museums, private clubs and event venues throughout Boston.

Passionate about events, Rachel is highly respected throughout the industry for her event planning expertise and for the professional relationships she has developed both with colleagues in the industry and her clients. Sensible and savvy, she knows how to maximize any budget to create a tasteful, fun and smooth event. Rachel has always loved entertaining and feels this is the job she was always meant to do.

On the staffing side of the business, Rachel personally interviews, screens and places every staff person she sends out. She will not send anyone to you that she would not have in her own home.

Rachel keeps on top of industry trends by reading trade journals and event planning blogs, and by attending regional meetings for event professionals. She has also attended The Special Event, a national convention for those in the event planning industry. She has been a proud member of ISES (the International Special Events Society) for over 15 years and served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Boston chapter.

About Us - Frequently Asked Questions

The event venue already has an event coordinator. Why do I need another one?

The venue coordinator is employed by the venue and works for them. They are catering sales managers and are there to help you choose a menu and assist with other details of your wedding or event as they pertain to food and beverage service and the venue. While enormously helpful and hardworking, the venue coordinator is not a substitute for having your own event planner who will take care of every detail – not just those pertaining to the venue. The Party People, Inc. works for you. We will coordinate every aspect of your wedding or event and function as the leader of your event team.

Ask yourself these questions: Will the on-site coordinator lead my wedding rehearsal? Will the on-site coordinator arrange a welcome reception, day-after brunch or other weekend activities at venues other than their own? Will the on-site coordinator source and assemble welcome bags or return the tuxes? Can the on-site coordinator attend my final dress fitting with me and learn how to bustle my train? These are only some of the reasons that you need an event planner who is not associated with a particular site or venue and who is totally focused on your event.

I’ve already planned most of the details and hired all of my vendors. Do I still really need a wedding consultant on the day of?

Definitely! From leading the wedding rehearsal to seeing you off at the end of the night, we will be there to provide Wedding Day Management. We are your wedding team leader and will coordinate all of the vendors and all of the logistics of the day. You and your family will be relaxed and truly able to enjoy every moment of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

My budget is already limited. How can I afford a wedding planner?

One of the advantages of working with The Party People is that we are skilled at working with almost any size budget and can keep you from making expensive mistakes. We will analyze your projected budget to make sure it is realistic. We will also listen to what is most important to you on your wedding day. Then we can put together a budget which will act as a roadmap once you start making decisions. It will alleviate a lot of anxiety because you will know approximately what you should be spending for each service you will need. We know how to budget your hard-earned dollars for maximum impact and we know where to cut back without sacrificing quality or style.

In the end, we will produce a fabulous event, including our fee, all while staying within your budget.

What Not To Ask Your Event Planner

Content borrowed from a blog article entitled “Questions You Should Never Ask Your Future Wedding Planner” by Cocktails & Details: The Wedding Planner’s Fabuluxe Blog.

Wedding magazines and books always have these atrocious questions that they feel brides should ask their vendors. This has always perplexed me, as it’s coming from an unaffiliated third party. I cannot tell you how we cringe at the questions we hear, and the looks on the faces of the poor couples that ask them – as they feel they are truly legitimate.

Wrong: What were you doing before you became a wedding planner? (This may not be any of your business, and if your planner feels uncomfortable or offended, it’s not a good way to start your consultation).

Right: What from your past experiences makes you a better planner?

Wrong: Which was your favorite wedding? (That’s like asking a mother which is her favorite child.)

Right: What is your favorite part of the wedding day or what is your favorite part of the wedding planning process?

Wrong: What was your most difficult wedding? (You’re asking family secrets and are not yet part of the family.)

Right: What are some of the challenges you’ve experienced during the wedding planning process or on the wedding day?

Wrong: Give me five adjectives that describe yourself. (This is not the Miss USA pageant. It is a business interview.)

Right: Tell us about your approach to the wedding day management or wedding planning process?

Wrong: What kind of discounts will you get us?

Right: There is no right way to ask this. Magazines and books leave you under the impression that your wedding planner or coordinator is a walking, talking Entertainment book–full of good info and discounts. While most planners are always happy to extend any professional courtesies from other vendors to their clients, these courtesies are never guaranteed and are given at the discretion of the vendor.

Wrong: Who is the best {insert vendor category here} or Who are your preferred vendors? (No good will ever come of this...)

Right: Which {vendor category} do you think is best suited to our style and budget? (Be prepared to get a general answer—if your planner offers vendor selection as a service, s/he may not divulge specific names without getting to know more about your wedding style... or being paid.)

Wrong: Why should we hire you over {your competitor}? (Again, no good will come of this.)

Right: Not really a right way to ask this. (It is up to you to make decision who is best for you. It is the planner’s job to stand out with her charisma and experience and stand up for her business and her professionalism—not compete or compare herself to someone else so that you can bargain shop.)

There are other questions that are, for lack of a better word “questionable”, too. The answers you think you want to hear may not have much stock:

Questionable Question: How many weddings do you have you done?

Why It’s Questionable: Just hearing a solid number will not help you make your decision because those numbers could be misleading. For example, let’s say Planner A’s answer is 200. Planner B’s answer is 25. Does that make Planner A better than Planner B? In your mind, does it determine that Planner A is more experienced? What if I told you that Planner A, did indeed work 200 weddings; however, half were elopements, the others were coordinations, and a few full service planning. What if you found out that Planner B’s 25 weddings were million dollar full service planning weddings full of details. A better question would be to ask the scale of the weddings the planner has in her repertoire: amount of guests, budgets, details, locations, etc.

Questionable Question: What associations do you belong to?

Why It’s Questionable: Believe it or not, the wedding planning industry is not a regulated one. Any Barbie, Skipper or Ken can open up a wedding planning company provided they meet the guidelines of their state with operating a business. Associations and trade groups have different bylaws, rules and education requirements, which makes it a bit inconsistent. Depending on your location, local chapters of said organizations may be non-existent. A far better question is to ask your planner about their continuing education and networking.

It will be very important for you to draw from what has been said, but also what has not been said. Pick up on your planner’s tone, warmth, humor and /professionalism. Do they put you at ease? Do you feel like you are handing your wedding off to a professional who not only cares about your event, but your well being, too. Have a conversation with your planner about your event—allow them to ask questions, offer insight and answer your inquiries.

Going Green

Here are just a few ways to add some environmentally conscious elements
to your event:

  • Send on-line invitations
  • Serve locally grown, organic food
  • Compost leftovers
  • Hold your event in one of Greater Boston’s 20+ certified green hotels
  • Use rented centerpiece containers
  • Recycle paper products, bottles, cans and plastics
  • Use a venue near a T stop or public transportation to minimize carbon footprint

Remember – adding even just a few small, environmentally friendly details to your event can make a huge difference.

We have resources for all of the above and recommend Second Helping and The Special E, both great organizations that distribute leftover food and other wedding/event waste.

Do I Need A Wedding Planner? Wedding Couple, Cake, Flowers

Why You Need A Wedding Planner

Not so long ago, a wedding planner was thought of as someone only used by wealthy couples planning extravagant weddings.

Well, not any more. Nowadays, over 62% of engaged couples use a wedding planner to save them time, money and a lot of stress.

Why do so many couples opt for help? Consider the fact that the average wedding takes approximately 250 hours of planning. That is the equivalent of 6.25 full-time work weeks. Most engaged couples are already working full-time jobs and have little time and patience to spend hours researching, checking references, meeting with vendors and visiting ceremony and reception venues. If you have been dreaming about your wedding forever, but already feel overwhelmed and not sure where to start, you need a wedding planner.

Ask Yourself These Questions

  • Do I have the time to drive around and look at ceremony and reception venues?
  • Do I have the time (and do I want) to research vendors that are available on my wedding day, work within my budget and provide great quality and service?
  • Am I able to visit these vendors during the daytime when their offices are open?
  • Am I comfortable negotiating contracts with caterers, photographers, florists, stationers, bakeries, etc.?
  • Can I deal with last minute problems that may come up the day of the wedding?

Instead of driving around all weekend, let us shortlist the venues that work with your style, budget and guest count. Instead of researching and interviewing countless photographers, videographers, caterers, and florists, let us determine the top two or three in each category that we feel will mesh with the vision you have for your wedding. Let us take away the stress, worry and exhaustion! Let us give you back your life!!

A wedding planner is a great investment if you don’t have a lot of time or have limited experience planning a large, complex event. Likewise, if you are planning a wedding in a different city than where your family lives or if you are going through a lot of other life passages at the same time, then a wedding planner can be an enormous help.

If, on the other hand, you have everything organized and under control, consider hiring us to coordinate it all on the “day of” so you can concentrate on being the bride and enjoying what you have been working so hard for. The Party People can put together a vendor schedule, conduct your rehearsal, gather all your attendants and get everyone down the aisle, then be at the reception to greet all the vendors and make sure everything is set up as you envisioned. You can see a full list of “day of” duties here.

Call us at 508-650-9220 or 401-213-6300 to set up your complimentary consultation. We will provide you with a detailed custom proposal.

Maybe you should consider eloping to beautiful South County, Rhode Island...

With miles of beautiful coastline, South County, RI offers a myriad of scenic settings for your wedding. Whether it takes place oceanfront, in lush gardens or even in a small chapel, it will cost a fraction of a big wedding with all the trimmings... but your wedding will still be meaningful and magical.

What about your relatives?

When you’re considering how to elope, it doesn’t have to be in secret, but it usually means there are fewer than six people in attendance. It can be just the bride and groom and two witnesses.

Quite often, couples who elope will host a gathering for family and friends at a later date back at home, after the formal wedding ceremony has taken place here in Rhode Island.

If you’re ready to elope, The Party People will create a special, stress-free wedding experience you’ll always treasure.

Ready to plan a beautiful, memorable elopement in Rhode Island?

We’re standing by to arrange your elopement. We can also arrange an elopement in other Rhode Island wedding destinations, such as Newport or Providence.

Corporate Events

“Thanks so much for a fabulous event! We have been hearing great compliments and couldn’t be happier with how everything went. I think you may have outdone yourself with this one. Thanks again, I look forward to working with you again soon.”

“Rachel Goldstein was invaluable to Streamline when we launched our business. The Party People were hired to plan and implement an event for 400 people at our center in Westwood, MA. Those attending included members of our board, customers, partners, CEO’s of international organizations and press. Needless to say, this was a very high profile and pivotal event for our company.

Rachel’s leadership and attention to detail made our event the overwhelming success that it was. From the superb quality of the catering, to the lighting and staging required to make a multimedia presentation to a seated audience, The Party People brought talented resources to the team to ensure a high quality event that allowed Streamline to enjoy the evening, and not worry about the details. I would strongly recommend The Party People for any event, big or small, and would call on Rachel again for her expertise.”

Staffing

“Sherri was an absolute delight to have in our home today and truly was quite helpful. I was appreciative of her hard work and professionalism to make our baby’s first party a success. I will certainly contact you for Jessica’s first birthday party. Thanks to you for your wonderful company.”

– Shari Kalmowitz

“Our party was a huge success! Without a doubt it was due in large part to the service and help that you provided. The nicest part of the day were the servers that came to help. Elaine, Karen, Peg and Merry did exactly what was expected and they were the nicest, most accommodating, most professional people. It feels a bit uncomfortable to have someone come to work for you in your own home, but they made us feel so at ease. They improvised and did everything they could to make the day smooth and festive. They found utensils we didn’t know we had, dressed up plain dishes and kept our house as spotless as it was before they came. We really can’t say enough about the success of our party or the excellence of your staff. Their service was exceptional.”

Sincerely, Michael, Jackie and Marc Ciriello

“Thank you! Eli was just fabulous and I look forward to using The Party People again.”
